Tequila, orange juice and grenadine for the “sunrise”

Playing with some backlighting to try and get that glowing warm look. I used flash coming in from the right back, with a white reflector to lift the shadows in the front a bit.
Taken with my Canon 650D and my Canon 100mm macro lens, on a tripod.

Going out of my comfort zone and playing around with dark and moody for a change. It was really interesting how much work I had to do to cut down the light, especially for the background, to get the feeling I was going for.

Rosalie, congratulations on a job well done. The way you’ve manipulated depth is commendable, with the blueberries leading the viewer’s eye from the foreground to the background seamlessly. The composition is well-balanced, focusing on the three primary elements: the bowl at the forefront, the blueberries to the left, and…Read More

Rosalie, great job on the storytelling with this photo – I immediately got the story you were aiming to tell, which is a big win. It fits our photo theme really well. I’m thinking, if you had moved a bit closer and cropped tighter, while still keeping the background elements in the frame, I think, would have had much more v…Read More

I shot this hungry little Cape White-Eye and its hard-working parents in my garden a week ago. The baby was quite tame and didn’t mind me following them around the garden with my big lens. It wasn’t quite mobile yet, although it could fly short distances and up into the shrubs, and spent…Read More

  • Happy New Year to my fellow DPC Tribe members! I saw the sign and just had to capture it and share it with the Tribe!
    Taken with my Samsung Galaxy.

  • Photographers Caught Cheating – Some go to great lengths for prizes and fame, even faking their shots, while others get penalized for simple retouching.

    • While I agree that news photographers must adhere to strict guidelines, I believe removing minor distractions like litter in a National Geographic image is harmless. However, competition rules are clear, and entrants must comply to avoid disqualification.

      • Yeah, I also didn’t think the cloning was bad, I would have done the same 🙂 I guess what I learnt is that it’s really important to read the rules, even if I think something would be allowed 🙈 The AI generated photos were ridiculous though.

    • I will only comment on the Wildlife images👍 To track wild animals in National Parks or game reserves they are usually identified by battle scars or unique markings. As a general rule all wildlife photographers are aware that no manipulation is allowed.

I was inspired last night by Danie’s Zoom session on B&W editing to have a look at some older photos to edit.

Taken on one of the DPC visits to Maboneng. It was a clear blue sky day, so nothing exciting happening in the sky, unfortunately.

    • Tip: To rectify the vignetting in the corners, consider using the lens correction feature in Lightroom.
