“When you photograph people in colour, you photograph their clothes. When you photograph them in black and white, you photograph their souls.” — Ted Grant
.
I’d like to share a small collection of portraits of Fouad Naimi — a Persian man with a strong, unmistakable presence and facial features that lend themselves strikingly to monochrome. These were created during a black-and-white studio portrait workshop I facilitated. Stripping away the colour lets the shape of the light, the texture, and his forceful character take centre stage.
.
Since that session, I’ve refined my black-and-white portrait workflow for striking character studies that keep real depth yet stay elegant — no overcooked, grungy vibe.
.
It’s straightforward: prep in Lightroom, skin retouch plus dodge and burn in Evoto, then back to Lightroom for the final conversion. The results feel truly intentional — strong, clean, and timeless — while saving me plenty of time.
.
In the new year, I’ll share the full technique with Pro members during one of our Pro-Lounge Zoom classes next month, along with the Lightroom Classic and Evoto presets I’ve built for these looks.#BlackAndWhitePhotography #BNWPhotography #Monochrome #Lightroom #Evoto
