Ormond Gigli. Girls in the Windows, New York, 1960
Photo Credit: Holden Luntz GalleryOrmond Gigli is famous for “Girls in the Windows,” shot in New York City in 1960. This iconic photo shows elegantly dressed women in the windows of a brownstone building slated for demolition. Gigli, whose studio was opposite the site, viewed the demolition as a unique photographic opportunity. Despite having no budget or sponsorship, he contacted an agency he had previously worked for and arranged for models to appear in his photo. Because the building lacked electricity and gas, and a large hole marred the adjacent sidewalk, Gigli secured city permission to park a Rolls Royce nearby. On the day, he arranged with the building’s foreman to halt demolition for two hours. The models, including his wife, were told to wear what they wanted and to arrive during lunchtime. To capture the photograph, Gigli extended himself from his studio’s fire escape with a wide-angle lens. He placed the models in the building’s 30 window frames and added three more at street level to complete the composition.
The resulting photograph has a sense of elegance, irony, and a bit of whimsy, reflecting a moment of beauty and change. It’s considered one of the great images of 20th-century photography.

I love this picture. It’s not nearly as risky as ‘Lunch Atop a Skyscraper,’ but I wonder what health and safety experts would say today about 30 models posing on window frames and a photographer hanging from a fire escape.
