Steve McCurry. Blue City, Jodhpur, India, 2010
Photo Credit: Artsy.netToday, we’re examining a distinctive photograph by Steve McCurry: a captivatingly romantic view of Jodhpur, also known as the “Blue City,” in Rajasthan, India. Through McCurry’s lens, we see a labyrinthine cluster of blue houses cascading towards the base of Mehrangarh Fort, one of India’s grandest forts. At night, the Blue City is lit up with bright lights shining on its buildings. The focal point is a couple adding splashes of colour with their traditional attire as they overlook the rooftop view. The photo feels both majestic and surreal. The dominant blue hues and vivid colours give the impression of a painting from a fantasy world.
On close inspection, zooming in almost to pixel level, the photo transforms into a magnificent tapestry of light, form, shape, and colour. There are other figures within the scene too; for instance, two individuals stand separately in their doorways, appearing as if they’ve been added with a painter’s stroke. This visual richness and intricate details underscores the idea that viewing photographs on small computer or mobile screens doesn’t do them justice; they deserve to be seen as large format prints in an art gallery.
Why the Blue City?
McCurry has taken several iconic photos in Jodhpur. The blue houses, primarily for Brahmins (the priest class), hold both historical and cultural significance. Some suggest the blue hue is linked with Lord Shiva, while others argue it serves a practical purpose: keeping homes cooler and repelling insects. In this image, McCurry captures both the historical essence and the lived experience of the city in a magical way!#SteveMcCurry #PhotoDigest #TravelPhotography #FineArtPhotography

The dreaminess of this photo makes me think of all the stories. The sameness yet uniqueness of every building is very much in contrast to modern matchbox developments with their carbon copy apartments. Something very romantic\historical\mythical in this photo, almost like 1001 Arabian Nights. This picture is serious but it also makes me think of the “Where’s Waldo” pics, because there is just so much to find.
