Sebastião Salgado: Church Gate Station, Bombay, India, 1995
Photo Credit: Artsy.netSebastião Salgado, initially an economist, transformed his career to become one of the world’s most celebrated photojournalists and fine art photographers. This iconic image, “Church Gate Station, Bombay, India, 1995”, commands price tags in the tens of thousands of dollars and serves as undeniable proof that documentary photography can transcend its factual origins and become art.
Church Gate depicts a sea of humanity at the Churchgate railway station in Bombay (now Mumbai). Salgado captures the evening rush hour, where thousands of commuters overflow from the train cars, many seated on the roof or hanging from the sides. The image showcases the density, chaos, and energy of one of the world’s most populous cities. It doesn’t just portray the city’s physical density but also its spirit, energy, and the daily chaos of life in such a populated urban centre. Mumbai’s trains are its lifelines, ferrying millions daily, acting as the city’s pulsating arteries. Like many of Salgado’s works, this photograph is in black and white. The monochromatic palette intensifies the contrasts, highlighting the human figures and immersing viewers in the scene’s magnitude and emotion.
Studying Salgado’s work isn’t just observation; it’s engaging with issues of environment, migration, labour, and urbanisation. His dedication to spotlighting stark realities and pressing situations worldwide isn’t just commendable—it’s a call for awareness and change. Some of his other notable works include “Workers (1993)”, “Genesis (2013)”, “The Sahel (1984-1985)”, and “Migrations (2000)”, each telling unique stories, but all rooted in Salgado’s distinct style and voice.

I love this “river” of people. It reminds me of a couple of lines in a poem we did in school by Mongane Serote about Johannesburg:
“…I travel on your black and white roboted roads
Through your thick iron breath that you inhale
At six in the morning and exhale from five noon…”
I often think about this as I commute. Inhale, exhale…inhale, exhale. Go to work, get back. Being part of the river and feeding the monster.
Wow. Thanks for this photo!
