Tequila Sunrise
Tequila, orange juice and grenadine for the “sunrise”
Playing with some backlighting to try and get that glowing warm look. I used flash coming in from the right back, with a white reflector to lift the shadows in the front a bit.
Taken with my Canon 650D and my Canon 100mm macro lens, on a tripod.
1/200 sec, f11,…Read More3 Comments -

I think the interesting cloud formation added significantly to this image. No, it’s not AI!

John, your photo is outstanding and certainly merits a weekly award. To elevate it further, consider increasing the contrast in the sky to add more drama and depth. Additionally, the watermark in the bottom left stands out significantly due to its stark contrast against the darker background, inadvertently drawing attention…Read More

This was an image I took many years ago and posted on the then Photocritic where I was fortunate enough to win the Photographer of the year at DPC. I am sure Danie will remember that.

This photo exudes a dynamic quality, as if the water is in motion, despite it being a still image. The haziness at the top centre adds an ethereal touch, enhancing the overall mystical feel.

Beautiful interaction between a leopard and her cub. Sabi Sabi Private Game Reserve.
Shot with Cannon 60D, ISO400, 1/800 sec at f/5
Would love some thoughts!3 Comments-
What a gorgeous shot! And such lovely backlighting, making those whiskers glow. Only suggestion from me would be to use a smaller aperture if possible (maybe f8) next time, to get both animals in pin-sharp focus. (I tend to make the same mistake, especially if I shoot in shutter priority, which is why I mention it.) But I know with wildlife, and…Read More

Jess, capturing a moment like this is truly a privilege. Your Leopard shots are strong contenders for a weekly award. However, there’s potential to enhance them significantly with some refined editing in Lightroom. I encourage you to submit all three images to our upcoming Pro Live Edit session. We’ll share the date and link in…Read More

Thanks Danie. On the back of this article, I decided to get both the 35 and 50mm F2 fuji lenses and used them at an informal evening work function which I volunteered to take photos of. I ended up using both, the 50 in the afternoon and then just stuck with the 35 for the rest of the evening and was pleasantly surprised at how well it turned out, especially in the low light conditions. I still have a lot to learn, but I enjoyed the experience and it open my eyes and mind to the benefits of sticking to a single focal length.

What an informative article. I have just done an informal birthday get together and used my 50mm throughout the evening although i did have a standard kit lens as a backup. I spent the entire day with my 50mm as i was so captivated with its capabilities as I am also still discovering my style. It is a wonderful lens to get you to interact with your (client) to get that perfect shot.
I must admit I am loving the challenges of this lens as I am also discovering how to approach various people with a lot more confidence than my usual shy personality.
