Fan Ho: “Hong Kong Venice,” 1962
Photo Credit: The GuardianFan Ho, affectionately dubbed ‘the great master,’ garnered acclaim as one of Asia’s most cherished street photographers, particularly for his work during the ’50s and ’60s in Hong Kong. The Guardian lauded him as ‘The Cartier-Bresson of the East,’ a nod to his profound impact and the enduring fascination his Hong Kong series has held for photography enthusiasts across multiple generations.
Ho recounts that 1954 signaled the onset of what he considers the golden age of pictorialism in his photographic journey. Pictorialism, he explains, is steeped in painterly traditions and aesthetics, where art is crafted for art’s sake. It’s not intended to serve as an objective documentary but as an articulation of the subjective mind. Instead of capturing mere truth, his work conjures captivating visuals that transport the viewer to a realm of beauty, evoking the essence of poetry, music, or drama.
His photo “Inferno,” captured in 1962, stands as a testament to the allure and depth that street photography can embody. The image depicts a lone figure stepping into a beam of light, with a trail of smoke enhancing the dramatic effect, hence the image’s fiery title. Ho’s knack for timing—the ‘decisive moment’—is evident, as the subject’s dynamic pose contrasts starkly with the static, silhouetted figures ascending the stairs. This commanding use of light and shadow not only accentuates the individual but also crafts a narrative of rebellion against conformity. The image vibrates with energy and defiance, resonating with those who perceive society through a critical lens. It’s a poignant reflection of the tension between individuality and the collective, captured by a master who views the world through a lens of artistry and expression. Danie’s inclusion of “Inferno” in his photography class emphasises its importance not merely as a photograph—it’s a cultural statement, a piece of visual poetry that continues to ignite conversations and inspire the imaginations of viewers across generations.
