Ernst Haas. Route 66, Albuquerque, New Mexico, 1969
“Route 66, Albuquerque, New Mexico, 1969” is the most iconic work by one of the pioneers of colour photography, Ernst Haas. This photograph became a symbol of America’s automobile culture and golden years. It’s eye candy at its best, as the viewer’s eyes keep exploring the otherworldly beauty of Route 66 and Albuquerque’s nightlife, filled with gas stations, motels, and restaurants. The road, filled with moving cars, creates a vanishing line, drawing you into the geometrical lines, shapes, and colours of a glorious urban scene. There’s so much for the eye to explore; the visuals are almost overwhelming. The reflecting colours of the billboards and glowing lights are gorgeously reflected in the textures of the asphalt road.
Haas was one of the first photographers who elevated colour photography as an art form. Before that, colour was often seen as an inferior medium, suitable mainly for journalistic and commercial work. Danie, in his 1 1/2-hour, in-depth analysis as part of DPC’s Masters of Photography Series on YouTube, feels his discussion barely scratches the surface despite the video already having over 350K views.
The “Route 66” image is part of Haas’s broader endeavour to capture the spirit and complexity of America. The glorious colour in this photo is due to the fact that Haas shot it on his favourite film, Kodachrome. Haas used colour not merely as a tool for documentary photography but as artistic expression.
Other pioneers of colour photography: Saul Leiter and William Eggleston
It’s interesting to know that the other two pioneers of colour photography, Saul Leiter and William Eggleston, like Ernst Haas, also preferred Kodachrome. However, their styles were very different from Haas’s. Leiter’s work was perhaps more subtle and nuanced, often utilising layering and reflections to deepen his images. On the other hand, Eggleston was known for shooting more straightforward subjects in a very bold manner.#PhotoDigest
