This image I shot of Nelson Mandela in Soweto either 2002/3. Chris Hani Baragwanath hospital.
Event for the opening of the Peri-natal HIV unit. I have done I think 4 shoots over the years with Nelson Mandela but this image is the most iconic I ever managed to get…even though I was closer on some occasions. Its one of my favourite portrait images…just right time right place and right angle.
Shot on film/ Neg. with a Nikon F90X and 28-105 zoom. Weird thing is I still have the negs and there is only this ONE frame thats good…the others not….besides of course all the event pics I took, but as far as Mandela portraits I only got this 1 shot.
Ive also sold this as a limited edition BW print. As a side note to this image…..I happened to see Nelson Mandela couple years after this and he offered to sign this print for me….said I should give it to his driver….but never had it with me and just never got around to it…too busy…so missed that opportunity….
thats why they say u got to strike while the iron is hot!

Capturing a figure like Mandela is indeed a significant achievement for any photographer. The authenticity of this candid documentary shot is striking, with the low angle view enhancing Mandela’s stature and presence.
