    Why AI-Generated Wildlife

The Erosion of Authentic Wildlife Storytelling

In wildlife photography, there exists an unspoken agreement between photographer and viewer: the image represents a real moment captured in nature. Such photographs are often the result of patience, deep knowledge of animal behaviour, and significant effort in challenging environments.
Today, that agreement is under threat.
As generative artificial intelligence becomes increasingly sophisticated, synthetic wildlife images are flooding social media feeds. While these images may appear impressive or emotionally engaging, they risk undermining authentic storytelling and damaging public understanding of wildlife and conservation.
Across digital platforms, viewers encounter seemingly extraordinary scenes: a lioness placing her cub beside a tourist for protection, an elephant gently reaching toward a child, or a cheetah resting calmly on a picnic blanket. Many of these images are entirely fabricated by AI yet are presented as genuine wildlife encounters.

This trend is far from harmless entertainment. It has serious implications for conservation, tourism, and public perception of wild animals.
When AI Imagery Normalises Harmful Behaviour
A recent example involved a social media influencer who shared AI-generated images of herself posing with lion and leopard cubs. Conservation professionals immediately raised concerns, explaining that such imagery normalises direct interaction with wild animals and may encourage exploitative tourism practices.
Rather than acknowledging these concerns, the influencer dismissed the criticism and framed it as an attack on her business.

The conservation community responded by publicly educating audiences about the risks associated with these depictions. Several safari operators and luxury lodges subsequently removed the influencer’s content and terminated partnerships.
This response was not about punishment. It was about protecting decades of conservation education and responsible wildlife messaging.
Ethical tourism operators have invested years in teaching visitors that wildlife should be respected from a distance. Supporting content that suggests otherwise undermines these efforts.

    The Safari Mirage

Artificial intelligence is increasingly being used to create idealised safari imagery: perfectly positioned leopards, flawless golden-hour lighting, and dramatic wildlife encounters that rarely occur in reality.
Such images create unrealistic expectations for travellers and distort perceptions of nature.
Real wildlife experiences are unpredictable. Animals hide in vegetation. Weather changes unexpectedly. Encounters may be brief and imperfect. Yet these authentic moments are precisely what make wildlife experiences meaningful.

AI-generated images also threaten livelihoods. Wildlife photographers, guides, and conservation storytellers spend years developing the skills necessary to document nature responsibly. When companies replace authentic photography with synthetic content, they devalue this expertise and disconnect audiences from reality.
Even more concerning are AI-generated depictions of humans interacting closely with predators or other wild animals. These images can encourage unethical tourism practices and create the false impression that dangerous animals are safe companions.

    The Underwater Challenge

The problem extends beyond terrestrial wildlife.
Marine conservationists have observed a growing number of AI-generated ocean scenes featuring impossible ecosystems, unrealistic animal behaviour, and fabricated underwater environments.

    Examples include:
    Whales performing anatomically impossible movements.
Great white sharks swimming peacefully alongside species that occupy entirely different habitats.
Coral reefs portrayed as vibrant and healthy despite real-world degradation.
These digital fantasies can weaken public understanding of the environmental challenges facing marine ecosystems.

When audiences repeatedly see flawless artificial oceans, they may become less aware of issues such as coral bleaching, biodiversity loss, and climate-related impacts. The urgency to protect real ecosystems can fade behind a screen of synthetic perfection.

    The Economic and Conservation Impact

Southern Africa is home to some of the world’s most talented wildlife photographers, filmmakers, and marine documentarians.
    Their work serves multiple purposes:
    Documenting species and ecosystems.
Supporting scientific research through photographic identification.
Raising public awareness about conservation issues.
Helping people develop emotional connections with nature.
These professionals spend countless hours in the field gathering authentic stories and evidence. Their work contributes directly to conservation efforts and often supports local economies.
Artificial intelligence cannot replace the lived experience behind those images.
An algorithm cannot understand the atmosphere of a storm at sea or the anticipation of waiting hours for a leopard to emerge from dense vegetation.

What Needs to Happen For Consumers

Avoid engaging with misleading AI wildlife content.
Verify the authenticity of wildlife images before sharing them.
Support photographers and creators who document real wildlife experiences.
    For Tourism Operators
    Publicly support ethical wildlife representation.
Avoid partnerships that promote misleading or harmful imagery.
Continue educating travellers about responsible wildlife encounters.
    For Social Media Platforms
    Strengthen AI-content disclosure requirements.
Develop improved verification systems for wildlife-related content.
Reduce the spread of misleading conservation imagery.
    For Media Organisations
Commission authentic wildlife photography whenever possible.
    Clearly label AI-generated content.
    Prioritise accuracy over visual perfection.
    For Educators and Conservationists
Promote media literacy and critical thinking.
Teach audiences how to recognise AI-generated content.
Continue telling authentic conservation stories, even when they are less sensational.

    Why Authenticity Matters

Artificial intelligence has enormous potential when used responsibly. However, its misuse in wildlife storytelling presents significant risks.
Authentic wildlife photography connects people with the natural world. It inspires conservation action because it reflects reality—the beauty, complexity, and vulnerability of ecosystems as they truly exist.
No AI-generated image, regardless of its visual quality, can replace the experience of witnessing a wild animal thriving in its natural habitat.
Protecting that reality is essential for conservation, responsible tourism, and future generations.

The next generation deserves to inherit real oceans, real savannas, and real wildlife—not merely digital simulations of them.

About Me

Bruna Mentrup

TUTOR

I started my wildlife photography journey with nothing but a passion for capturing what I had seen unfold before me for years.

Determined I could achieve that, I set out with the most basic equipment, and eventually, my efforts were rewarded.

I, fortunately, love travel and being in my own company, so I spend months on the road in perfect partnership with the animals, great light, and the landscape. My confidence grew, and my images started to speak for themselves; so did my range of equipment, as did the awards.

My proudest moment was being made a Licentiate by the Photography Society of South Africa. I take so much pride in the steps I have taken, and it gives me such joy to see my work in magazines and hanging on walls of game lodges across Africa.

My philosophy is that anyone can acquire technical skills in photography. Still, you need heart, passion and a deep connection with what is around you to capture the finest of what Mother Nature has on offer.
