Guidelines for Posting Photo Critiques

Please adhere to the guidelines below when posting images:

  • Title: Assign a fitting title to your photo.
  • Settings & Equipment: Detail your ISO, shutter speed, aperture, camera model, lens used, and other essential equipment.
  • Technique: Provide a brief description of the steps and methods you used in capturing the photo.
  • Editing: Elaborate on your post-processing steps, techniques, and the software you used.
  • Reflection & Questions: Share your personal assessments and pinpoint specific areas where you’d like feedback or guidance.

Example Post:

Here is an example of the info you need to supply when uploading a picture

Danie Bester, Sandton Skyline, Johannesburg, 2023 (Title)

ISO-100, 198 sec at f/5.6 in Bulb-Mode. Canon EOS R with a 17mm Tilt-Shift lens on a tripod with remote shutter release. (Settings and Camera Equipment)

Captured from Sandton City’s rooftop during Nautical Twilight using vertical mode to create a three-image panorama: center, left, and right. (Technique)

Used Lightroom for editing, merged the images into a panorama, adjusted colors, and enhanced building details. I explored Bulb Mode for the first time and would appreciate advice on its execution. (Editing and Reflection)

Other Guidelines

  • Frequency: Pro members can share up to 4 images each calendar month (from the 1st to the end). Our professional team will critique at least one of these, while the community is welcome to critique the remainder.
  • Image Size: Your images should preferably be 1600px on the longest edge.
  • Category Assignment: Categorize your uploads appropriately. Refrain from over-tagging; too many categories dilute their value.
  • Editing: We allow all editing styles, but you must provide a comprehensive description of your changes.
  • Authenticity & Copyright: We value originality. Only share your own work. If your piece is nominated for a Photo Award, we might request the original or RAW file for confirmation. By sharing, you affirm you own the copyright or have permission to share the image. All members retain all rights to their photographs. DPC might use your image for the purpose of teaching or showcasing on our platform. However, DPC will not use your images outside of the platform without your explicit permission.
  • Respectful Interaction: Our goal is to foster a supportive and respectful atmosphere. Seasoned photographers are encouraged to offer balanced critiques. Feedback should be both instructive and encouraging. Members without the requisite experience or expertise in critiquing are kindly asked to abstain from offering critiques. Remember, every critique offers a fresh perspective. Approach each with an open mind.
