Alex Prager, one of the most prominent fine art photographers of our time, was recently featured by Danie in DPC’s Fine Art Photography series for Pro Members. Prager is celebrated for her hyperrealist approach, crafting meticulously staged scenes that blur the line between reality and fiction. Hyperrealism, a genre that originated in painting, aims to present subjects in extreme detail, often mimicking or exaggerating reality to create an artificial or dreamlike quality. In photography, this approach is used to construct elaborate narratives, layering aesthetic perfection with subtle emotional depth. Prager’s work often evokes a cinematic feel, drawing inspiration from Hollywood, vintage aesthetics, and human psychology. In Crowd #3 (Pelican Beach), Prager creates a vibrant tableau that captures a beach scene filled with an eclectic mix of characters. At first glance, the scene feels like a snapshot of reality, but upon closer inspection, the carefully staged poses and interactions reveal an underlying artificiality. The bright, saturated colours add to the hyperreal quality, making every detail—from the textures of the sand to the clothing of the beachgoers—stand out vividly.
The composition is packed with stories: each character seems to exist in their own world, yet collectively they create a chaotic harmony. The central figures, a man and boy in matching blue, hold hands and seem to be in motion, anchoring the scene while contrasting with the relaxed postures of others. The sheer density of people and objects, combined with the layered details, invites viewers to explore the frame repeatedly, discovering new stories with each glance. The image offers a commentary on human behaviour, isolation within crowds, and the performative nature of public spaces.
What is Hyperrealism?
Hyperrealism in photography seeks to heighten reality by emphasising visual details, colour, and emotional exaggeration. Like Prager’s Crowd #3, these images often feel surreal, bridging the gap between truth and artifice. The genre pushes viewers to question what is real and what is constructed, while immersing them in meticulously crafted worlds.—
Challenge for Photographers
Create your own staged hyperrealist scene. Focus on meticulous details—costumes, props, lighting—and ensure every element contributes to a cohesive narrative. Pay attention to colour and placement to create layers of meaning and aim to blur the line between the real and the imagined. Share your results and tell us: How did you construct your hyperrealist vision?—
Pro Tip for Hyperrealism
To truly bring out the details needed for hyperrealism, ensure you work with high-resolution equipment. These images are best viewed large-scale, so consider renting a medium format camera or a high-pixel DSLR/mirrorless camera for the shoot. This will ensure the incredible depth and detail in your composition translate beautifully, whether displayed digitally or printed on a grand scale.—
