Ruth Bernhard: Lifesavers, New York, 1930

This is our third consecutive exploration of Ruth Bernhard’s work, and Lifesavers (1930) presents yet another dimension of her artistry. While her nudes focus on the human form as sculpture and her architectural studies celebrate geometric precision, this still-life is yet another testament to her compositional prowess and her ability to transform the mundane into the extraordinary. Here, Bernhard uses simplicity to great effect, turning a scattering of Lifesaver candies into a visually compelling image.

What makes this photograph so engaging is its use of light and shadow. The candies are elevated off the surface, casting bold, elongated shadows that create a pattern of ovals and lines across the composition. These shadows not only add depth but also become part of the image’s story, creating a sense of rhythm and structure. As Gregory Maguire said, “The eye is always caught by light, but shadows have so much to say.” This photograph embodies that sentiment, drawing attention to the quiet power of shadows and their role in transforming what could have been an otherwise lacklustre image into a captivating study.

The harsh lighting enhances the textures and shapes of the candies while accentuating the sharp contrast between the bright highlights and deep shadows. The meticulous arrangement of the Lifesavers creates a sense of order, yet the simplicity of the composition allows the viewer’s imagination to fill in the rest. Bernhard demonstrates how minimalism can captivate, proving that even the most ordinary objects can be transformed into something meaningful and beautiful.

    Challenge for Photographers
Create your own still-life composition using everyday objects. Experiment with light and shadow to add depth and interest, and focus on simplicity to draw attention to form and texture. Danie Bester often reminds photographers that the art of still life is an excellent exercise in observation, patience, and intent.
