Annie Leibovitz. Leonardo DiCaprio with a Swan, 1997

This portrait has always intrigued me with its ingenious composition and execution. Captured for Vanity Fair in 1997, it features a young Leonardo DiCaprio, his neck entwined with a swan. Some critics find this photograph rather eerie, even morbid, but I see it as exuding both playfulness and sophistication. It stands as a testament to Leibovitz’s brilliance and storytelling capabilities.Reportedly inspired by the ethereal beauty of swans and their association with grace, the image juxtaposes this elegance with DiCaprio’s rising status as a leading man in Hollywood. Taken in 1997—the same year Titanic premiered and catapulted him to stardom—the photograph cleverly mirrors his ascent with the swan’s symbolic grace. Shot in black and white, the swan becomes a living prop, creating a surreal and almost otherworldly interaction between the actor and the bird.
Leibovitz’s masterful use of visual juxtaposition and tonal contrast elevates this seemingly simple composition. The white swan against DiCaprio’s dark clothing creates a striking visual balance, while the soft lighting accentuates the texture of the swan’s feathers and the actor’s skin. The result is a timeless portrait that feels both whimsical and elegant.
What makes this photograph work so effectively is Leibovitz’s ability to weave a narrative within a single frame. She turns what could have been a conventional celebrity portrait into a layered story of beauty, fame, and vulnerability. The swan’s long neck curving around DiCaprio’s, almost as though in an embrace, adds a touch of intimacy that humanises the grandeur, making it as relatable as it is striking.
