Henri Cartier-Bresson. Behind the Gare Saint-Lazare, Paris, 1932
‘The Man Jumping over a Puddle’Capturing the perfect moment is like catching a firefly in a jar; timing is everything. Henri Cartier-Bresson’s photo, “Behind the Gare Saint-Lazare, Paris, 1932,” is a classic example. The image freezes a man in mid-air as he jumps over a puddle, showing what Cartier-Bresson called “the decisive moment.” But it’s not just about timing; it’s also about how the scene is arranged. Cartier-Bresson himself said, “Photography is not like painting. There is a creative fraction of a second when you are taking a picture. Your eye must see how things line up, and you must know intuitively when to click the camera. That’s when the photographer is creative. If you miss it, it’s gone forever.”
It’s worth mentioning that Cartier-Bresson did this using a Leica rangefinder, an older, analog camera. Unlike modern digital cameras that can take many frames per second, his Leica gave him only one chance to get it right. There was no option to take multiple shots quickly or check the photo right away. Each click was a final decision, making his achievement even more impressive.
In this iconic photo, the jumping man, the puddle, and the fence all come together to create a balanced picture. It’s not just about capturing the man in the air but also the way everything in the frame lines up. That point, where timing and scene arrangement come together, is what Cartier-Bresson focused on.
The challenge of capturing such a moment, especially with older technology, highlights Cartier-Bresson’s skill. It’s a reminder to today’s photographers to look beyond modern tools and focus on that special point where time and arrangement come together.

This is something that I struggle with. Do I take good photos, or am I just lucky that one of the frames turned out okay? 🙂
