Photo Credit: The Helmut Newton EstateHelmut Newton, renowned for his provocative and often erotically charged photography, made a lasting impact on both fashion and art photography. Despite his personal belief that his photographs were not art, his work significantly influenced how women were portrayed, marking him as a pioneer in visual storytelling within fashion editorials and advertisements.
Newton’s distinctive style, described as rebellious and groundbreaking, subverted stereotypical beauty norms and portrayed models as strong, powerful women. He challenged popular perceptions of femininity, often infusing high glamour with a sense of daring and danger. This photograph of model Willy Van Rooy is an early example of his narrative approach in fashion shoots. Titled “How to Make the Fur Fly,” it captures Van Rooy in motion, seemingly fleeing a small airplane in a scene reminiscent of Alfred Hitchcock’s 1959 film “North by Northwest.”
