“John and Yoko” by Annie Leibovitz, taken in New York on December 8, 1980, is one of the most evocative and well-recognized photographs in modern history. It features musician and former Beatle John Lennon alongside his wife, artist Yoko Ono. Captured just hours before Lennon’s assassination, the photograph has a haunting quality that has deeply resonated over the decades.

In the image, Lennon is nude and in a fetal position, curled around a fully clothed Ono. With his eyes closed, he kisses her cheek and frames her head with his arm. The striking contrast between his vulnerability and her clothed, stoic presence is profound. Little did they know that only hours after Leibovitz took this Polaroid, Mark David Chapman, a former security guard, would fatally shoot Lennon outside his building, the Dakota. When Rolling Stone featured Leibovitz’s photograph on its January 22, 1981, cover, they chose to publish it without any additional graphics or text, allowing the image’s raw power to stand alone. This photograph inadvertently became a document of the couple’s final moments together, possibly their last kiss. Today, it remains a profound testament to love and loss.

Leibovitz, renowned for her ability to create intimate and revealing portraits of celebrities, masterfully captured Lennon and Ono’s relationship in this photo. Her exceptional skill in portraying complex emotions and personalities is what sets her apart as a photographer. This ability to delve beneath the surface gives her portraits a deeply personal and enduring quality, making this one of her most famous and significant works.
