“This Is My Territory (Hippo)”
1/8000sec – f/5,6 – ISO 1600 – Flash Not Fired – Nikon D4 – Nikon 300-400 (Focal length 400mm) – Manual Mode – Camara SupportI found this Hippo in a small waterhole all by himself. When I arrived, he was calm and showed no signs of territorial behaviour. I had about half an hour before losing light and entering camp before they closed the gates. After capturing a few frames, I decided to pack up and make my way back to camp. However, the Hippo became extremely aggressive every time I started my engine. To keep a long story short, I eventually lost light and got fined at the gate!
I captured this particular image practically in the dark. I used no flash. Instead, I pushed my ISO to 1600 and kept my speed fast to freeze the water droplets (my purpose). My choice of f/stop still gave me a shallow DOF with a focal length of 400mm. Suppose you are wondering how this is possible. In that case, my answer is that I underexposed my image and relied on my camera’s phenomenal dynamic range to pull detail back into the shadows.

About Me
Bruna Mentrup
TUTOR
I started my wildlife photography journey with nothing but a passion for capturing what I had seen unfold before me for years.
Determined I could achieve that, I set out with the most basic equipment, and eventually, my efforts were rewarded.
I, fortunately, love travel and being in my own company, so I spend months on the road in perfect partnership with the animals, great light, and the landscape. My confidence grew, and my images started to speak for themselves; so did my range of equipment, as did the awards.
My proudest moment was being made a Licentiate by the Photography Society of South Africa. I take so much pride in the steps I have taken, and it gives me such joy to see my work in magazines and hanging on walls of game lodges across Africa.
My philosophy is that anyone can acquire technical skills in photography. Still, you need heart, passion and a deep connection with what is around you to capture the finest of what Mother Nature has on offer.
