Model: Angel MoyoISO-200, 1/640 sec at f/1.8. Canon EOS-R, RF 35mm lens.
Lightroom EditSharing some portraits of Angel, taken during a practical portrait session. Unusually, Danie chose a wide-angle lens. While most portrait photographers, including Danie, often opt for telephoto lenses like 50-85mm for APS-C cameras or 85-135mm for full-frame cameras, wide-angle lenses can offer a distinct look. They are sometimes used to deliberately distort subjects for caricatures or exaggerated, larger-than-life portrayals. Here, Danie minimised distortion by mostly keeping his model in the center of the frame.
A wide aperture of f/1.8 ensured optimal sharpness and background blur, lending the images an ethereal quality. This mood is amplified by the model’s expressions and the black-and-white conversion. Another aspect to contribute to the aesthetic, is the 16×9 cinematic crop, where the extra width provides more of a narrative, making the images more interesting.
