Thickbilled weaver female eating seeds from a White Stinkwood tree.
Thickbilled weavers mainly occurs in the eastern parts (KZN and Eastern Cape) of South Africa but there is a small isolated population in Gauteng. They eat insects, fruit and hard-shelled seeds that they open with their strong beak. This hen is enjoying the hard seeds of a white stinkwood tree. They are usually gregarious in flocks of up to 50 birds and rarely solitary or in small groups. In our garden they are usually in a small group. Maybe the numbers of birds and the urban environment in the Gauteng population, does not allow for large flock to gather.
