Thank you, Bruna! These birds are indeed very shy. A day earlier, I tried to get a decent shot of a male Cardinal Woodpecker. He did his utmost to put as much vegetation between us – quite successfully I might add. I have attached my best attempt to capture him.

The best way to find them is to listen for their signature tapping sound as they forage for insects. I have not researched it but my impression is that they are not territorial as they will disappear for months on end.
