  • First time I properly used Photopills. Had to figure out where to position myself to be in the right spot for the moonrise just behind the Cape Recife Lighthouse. Luckily the weather played along.

Took 3 bracketed shots in anticipation of doing an HDR, but in the end it was very difficult to correctly merge them without making the moon look fake.…Read More

    • Excellent execution, and well done on your Photo Award! I’m glad to see you using PhotoPills—I’m still only using the basics like checking light cycles, not determining the precise position of the sun and moon as you did here. It would be fantastic if you could explain your process at the next ProLounge meeting.

  • “”Gawking in Yosemite”

I often find that the bustling photographers make a more interesting subject than the real “subject”.

Came across this old shot of mine while cleaning up my Lightroom catalogue.

  • Very valuable video with explanation on working with LightRoom catalogs if, like me, you travel often.

  • Was out practicing panning shots today. Will share some of the most successful ones later, but in the meantime, here’s one of the “unsuccessful” ones that I actually like the most.

Here, I was testing out some very slow shutter speeds and I just love how it emphasizes the colours

  • Gonna be spending the month of August building my skills in panning photos. Hopefully attempting multiple subjects and conditions.

Will share my notes and results here as we go along. Any and all inputs appreciated.

    • After watching a bunch of Youtube videos, I’ve condensed the learning into:

      1. Use AI Servo Mode for Canon, and AF-C for other camera brands.
      2. Use a higher aperture (f8 and up) for a more forgiving DoF
      3. Shutter speed will depend on the speed of the subject, but start with 1/250 and adjust until you hit the sweet spot.
      4. Use Auto ISO to…Read More

      • Great tips! Thanks for sharing, Greg. I’d love to hear Bruna’s input as well. Here are a few more tips from my own experience with panning:

        Depth of Field (DoF)
        – If you’re using a medium to long telephoto lens, like a 50-150mm, f/5.6 will suffice.

        Focus
        – Use Back Button Focus.
        – If using a mirrorless camera and shooting people or…Read More

  • On the relationship between the producer and consumer of art

A central question in the world of art is whether alignment between the artist’s intention and the viewer’s interpretation is necessary to be considered as art.

Exploring this question is well served by exploring some examples:

    Example 1: The Mona Lisa

  • As always, the questiion “What is art?” Is top of mind.

It could be around whether photography is art, or whether AI generated images are art.

Here’s a short exploration if the topic:
