Few people realise that a portrait can still be be very moody, even when shot against a bright backdrop—when the subject is silhouetted. This is an excellent example, Ray, and congratulations on your photo award!
Just a slight heads-up for next time: ensure your backlight isn’t too overpowering. If you look closely, the loose hair strands on top…Read More

Another excellent upload! I love the drama and mood, and how the clouds lead the eye to the vintage and rustic tractor. However, the area just beyond the tractor is too bright compared to the rest. Then also, applying a radial filter to add a touch more light to the tractor would really enhance the image. I’d love to see a re-edit of this o…Read More

Pieter, thank you so much for sharing your actual work on the platform. I have great admiration for your videography and still photography skills. I love how you tell your story in a way that strips away all the unnecessary elements, leaving only the essence of the narrative. It’s an outstanding example for all our students!

With the Sony 28-70 f/2, some call it the best zoom lens ever—or even a prime lens killer. Hear what Dustin has to say!

About Me

Danie Bester
DPC Founder, Programme Director. Fine Art and Commercial Photographer
The more abstract forms of photography like impressionism and minimalism intrigue me. I prefer creating images that depict energy, mood, and silence. To illustrate my themes, I use mainly long exposures, selective focus, and focus blur. My philosophy is that the camera is just a paintbrush and that thought-provoking images stem from a developed mind.

Excellent, Beaunard! I really love the black-and-white conversion—clean and dramatic. The layering of the composition is brilliant, with the foreground details leading to the wagon in the middle ground and then to the clouds and mountains in the background. It’s a fantastic example of creating depth in landscape photography. Just a heads-up: the…Read More
