Over the past few months, we’ve spoken a lot about portfolios and more recently, photography style, especially in our Pro Members and Creative Classes. This morning, I stumbled across Dmitry Bocharov’s Behance portfolio and thought it would be a great example to share. As I mentioned in our portfolio class, Behance is one of the easiest and most effective ways to get your work out there.
.
What struck me about Dmitry’s work is its simplicity and his use of muted colour palettes, dominated by deep warm and cool tones. He also uses tone curves to enhance the mood, which aligns with what we covered last month. His portfolio isn’t cutting-edge or highly conceptual like some of the photographers we often discuss, but his carefully framed compositions and cohesive style really stand out.
.
Take a moment to check out his work: https://www.behance.net/dmitrybocharov, and read my insights about his portfolio below:

Portfolio Lessons
1. Simplicity in Presentation: Dmitry’s portfolio showcases simplicity in both layout and content. This minimalist approach allows his images to take centre stage, avoiding distractions. Lesson: Prioritise clean, user-friendly designs for your portfolio.2. Cohesive Style: Despite covering various subjects, Dmitry’s muted colour palette and careful use of light create a cohesive style. He employs deep warm and cool tones, likely enhanced by tone curves. Lesson: Consistency in editing and tone helps establish your identity as a photographer.
3. Thoughtful Compositions: His compositions are carefully framed, highlighting an appreciation for balance and subtlety. Lesson: A portfolio should reflect thoughtful and intentional framing—don’t include cluttered or rushed compositions.
4. Business Appeal: Dmitry’s portfolio appeals to both consumers and businesses. His polished, visually cohesive style makes his work versatile and marketable. Lesson: Your portfolio isn’t just about showcasing creativity but also about appealing to your target audience.
What Makes a Portfolio Effective
