August Sander. Three Young Farmers on Their way to a Dance, 1914
Credit: Rare Historical PhotosIn the 1914 photograph “Three Farmers on Their Way to a Dance,” August Sander showcases three young men poised in their best outfits. Interestingly, despite the title, these individuals were not actually farmers but worked at an ore mine. On this particular occasion, they were dressed to attend two different dances in the vicinity.
The composition utilises the rule of odds, a principle in visual design which suggests that an odd number of elements, in this case three, tends to be more interesting and visually appealing than even numbers. The grouping of these men also offers a prime example of two of the Gestalt theory laws in action.
The Law of Similarity: Subjects that are similar to each other create a group and are seen as united, compared to those which are dissimilar. These men are dressed similarly, each wearing a top hat and holding a walking stick.
The Law of Proximity: Elements placed close to one another are perceived as a group, rather than isolated entities. There is a progression from the man on the left to the other two, who are grouped almost as an individual element. The man on the left, with a cigarette casually held between his lips, forms a counterpoint to the closely aligned figures on the right.
There is also a very nice rhythmic visual flow due to the subtle differences in their stance and the angle of their walking sticks, which create a harmonious balance. Upon closer inspection, we also appreciate the distinct expressions and personalities framed under those hats.
This image is so dissimilar to the portrait of the two boxers we discussed earlier, but the consistent thread of Sander’s ability to truly capture the essence of individuals within their environment is evident. Sander truly had a knack for elevating everyday moments into timeless glimpses into the human condition, whether he is portraying an individual, a pair, or a trio.
