Fan Ho. Approaching Shadow, Hong Kong, 1954
Photo Credit: Sotheby’sFan Ho, a celebrated Chinese photographer, director, and actor, was known for his poetic street scenes of post-war Hong Kong. Born in Shanghai in 1931, Ho moved with his family to Hong Kong at an early age, where he began to explore the bustling streets with his camera. His work is characterized by a profound understanding of light and shadow, earning him the title of the “Great Master of Light and Shadows.”
Captured at Queen’s College in Causeway Bay, this photograph was meticulously composed with his cousin as the model. She is positioned where a distinct vertical line meets a sharp diagonal shadow, anchoring her as the focal point amidst the vastness of the wall. The contrast of her dark attire against the wall’s brightness heightens the drama of the looming shadow.
Ho’s intention with this image was to symbolize the inevitable passage of time and the fading of youth. The creative setup of this shot doesn’t detract from its power; it showcases Ho’s deliberate and skilled approach to storytelling through photography.
