Leonard Misonne, a Belgian photographer, was one of the foremost figures of the Pictorialist movement. The Pictorialists endeavoured to craft photographs that captured mood and atmosphere, emulating the style of paintings rather than prioritizing sharp detail. “Sortie De La Gare,” or “Exit from the Station, Namur, 1938,” epitomises the movement’s characteristic mood and drama.

The composition is impeccable; the vertical lines of the signal towers and the leading lines of the train tracks guide us through the scene, passing a focal point—a silhouetted figure, perhaps a railroad worker, by the tracks. The viewer’s gaze is drawn beyond this figure to a train in the distance, its direction ambiguous. The cropped figure at the right edge is secondary to the vanishing lines of the rails, the solitary figure, and the train—all underscored by those commanding vertical signals, demonstrating Misonne’s visual prowess.
