Charles-Francois Thibault. Barricades rue Saint-Maur. Avant l’attaque, 1848
Photo Credit: WikipediaThis seminal photograph, “Barricades rue Saint-Maur. Avant l’attaque, 25 juin 1848”, captured by Charles-Francois Thibault, holds historical significance for two pioneering reasons: it is celebrated as the inaugural photograph of a barricade or uprising, and it marked the advent of visual journalism, being the first photograph to grace the pages of a newspaper just days later, on 1 July 1848. In today’s fast-paced, image-saturated world, it’s nearly unfathomable to envision news without accompanying photographs. However, Thibault’s evocative image of the June Days Uprising – a brief yet blood-stained workers’ rebellion – was transfigured into an engraving and prominently featured in L’Illustration, a renowned French weekly periodical.
Risking personal safety, Thibault defied the curfew to craft this ethereal image from a rooftop perch, likely in the early morning hours, between 7 and 8 am. The image was meticulously imprinted onto a metal plate using the daguerreotype process. Despite the painstaking effort, requiring anywhere from 3 to 15 minutes for a single exposure, the resultant image was far from an impromptu snapshot that might have allowed Thibault a swift escape.
The photograph reveals a deserted streetscape, with the houses standing shuttered and doors sealed. The rioters are ensconced behind their barricades, with a flag defiantly hoisted atop a wagon wheel crowning the foremost barricade. Thibault’s photograph beautifully encapsulates the charged, eerie silence that would have permeated the air in those nascent moments of the uprising.
The photo is a testament to photojournalism’s transformative power. By capturing a slice of reality frozen in time, Thibault’s photo communicated the tension and gravity of the situation to a broader audience, forever changing the way news was reported. It highlighted the significance of visual storytelling in journalism, paving the way for photography’s integral role in today’s media landscape. This image, fraught with risk and brimming with history, underlines the profound impact of photojournalism – its ability to translate complex narratives into a single, potent frame.

About Me

Jako Poolman
Vice-Principal - BMT College
I am an amateur/enthusiast/hobbyist photographer looking to improve my technique and find my style. Right now, I enjoy all types of photography. I lean more towards the challenge of street photography and enjoy the mix of technicality, composition, and creativity of studio work.
As an educator and Vice-Principal of BMT College, I get to do what I love, by creating opportunities for people to learn and improve their worlds.
I absolutely believe that every one of us has infinite potential, but that our purpose for existence is only a fraction for ourselves and mostly for other people.
Focus on and enjoy the process, the work, the grind. Have fun. The rest will follow.
