The Power of Red in Fashion Photography

Using the colour red in set design and styling as a huge siren for an incredible, sexy studio editorial.

Photographing fashion is not an everyday occurrence for Kaimara, as our main client base is usually a lot of corporate and documentary work. So when I get the chance to challenge myself, to get creative either in the studio or on location, and skillfully try and do some fashion photography, I most definitely try to rise to the challenge.

Shooting with Yolandi Jacobsz from Loci Photography, as she builds and constructs her new business, even if already two years in the making, called KittyKink Apparel, is always a good expenditure of my time. I get to be technical, which is a strength of mine, and I get to try and provide a service for someone with a very clear vision of her own whilst giving her the best of my long career’s abilities.

KittyKink Apparel is a sensual apparel range aimed at making women, of all sizes, shapes, ages and backgrounds, feel supremely sexy and sensual when wearing the brand’s garments. Yolandi has created a beautifully stylish brand with impeccable details, and the quality is of the highest degree. This red shoot done at the Loci Photography studio was styled in such a way that it screamed “siren”, with a bright, glossy red polyester background and props such as glitterballs, a cowboy hat, and cheeky lip sticker tattoos. Her dramatic makeup, carefully done, added to the styling and fun additions such as a red lip telephone made for fashionably styled images that oozes sensuality and sexyness.

The Canon EOS R6 II is a trusted workhorse I’ve had for a few years already, as it never misses a shot with its focusing system. The lighting we used was a combination of the Aputure LS 300d II and an Aputure Spotlight Max, being able to control where the highlights and shadows fell and for that very dramatic cinematic feel, and the Aputure Amaran PT4c RGB Pixel Tube Lights to add some colour in darker areas and really amp up the brightness of the red elements.

The KittyKink brand is introducing a new arm of its garments, called FANG –  a very sexy leather undergarment- and accessory range. These pieces are wow, and so much work and dedication went into their development. Listening to Yolandi passionately speak about her range is inspiring, and I think she is going to do tremendously well with her venture. I’m glad to be a part of her styled shoots; her ideas always seem to be neverending.
