Hi Bruna. Thanks. I totally agree. Zoomed it would have been ideal but the whole incident happened in about 5 seconds and I was hand holding at only 1000 sec (and I’m not as steady as I used to be). So i figured my best bet was to get the shot I could and trust my 5d had the resolution to allow a crop.

Gonna be spending the month of August building my skills in panning photos. Hopefully attempting multiple subjects and conditions.
Will share my notes and results here as we go along. Any and all inputs appreciated.

After watching a bunch of Youtube videos, I’ve condensed the learning into:
1. Use AI Servo Mode for Canon, and AF-C for other camera brands.
2. Use a higher aperture (f8 and up) for a more forgiving DoF
3. Shutter speed will depend on the speed of the subject, but start with 1/250 and adjust until you hit the sweet spot.
4. Use Auto ISO to…Read More-
Great tips! Thanks for sharing, Greg. I’d love to hear Bruna’s input as well. Here are a few more tips from my own experience with panning:
…
Depth of Field (DoF)
– If you’re using a medium to long telephoto lens, like a 50-150mm, f/5.6 will suffice.
…
Focus
– Use Back Button Focus.
– If using a mirrorless camera and shooting people or…Read More-

The genesis of photography as we now know it was in 1826, when Joseph Nicephore produced the first permanent photograph on a metal plate coated with bitumen. Wildlife photography was born a little later, in the early 186os, when a handful of people began taking pictures of domestic and zoo
animals.
Some images from this period – such as the…Read More -

The Canon EOS R1 has just been launched, and don’t be fooled by the title of this video! The R1’s focusing system is absolutely insane, and we can see why sports, wildlife, and documentary photographers will love this beast of a camera!

I can understand why Jared believes the EOS R1 is a mere upgrade to the EOS R3. It shoots 24 megapixels and matches the R3 in many aspects. However, the incredible and improved focus system, robustness, and several other upgrades make the R1 a worthy flagship. It will be interesting to hear from those who have been shooting with the R3 for some time?

Thank you for posting John, you captured wonderful action here. Good light in the eye, well exposed, and very sharp. I’m not sure if you croped this image like that however, if not, just a tip, always better not to zoom in so much to allow for more drama in your composition. It would have given your image the impact thats lacking here. Have a look…Read More
